Introduction to video notes

Introduction to video notes

1.    What are some advantages of digital video
Digital video is the single most dominant form of live video and image capturing. Its capable of transforming the brightness of the light in a digital signal. To make a photo would not only increase the quality but also the quantity.

2.    What is meant by frame rate in video
Frame rates in videos refer to the speed at which the image is refreshed (typically in frams per second; FPS)

3.    Are all videos/movies the same frame rate, explain your answer
No because not all videaos and movies have the same frame rates. An example would be if someone was running a marathon there would be lots of movement there fore there would be a lower frame rate and would have an effect on quality. But if someone was reading a book there would be little movement and would no have a major effect on quality. The frame rate depends on what is being filmed and the movements/ actions which are being done.

4.    What is meant by resolution, how is it measured.
Resolution is the term used to describe the number of dots, or pixels, used to display an image.
Higher resolutions mean that more pixels are used to create the image. When a monitor's resolution is described, the description generally consists of the number of dots (pixels) contained in each line followed by the number of lines on the monitor. The number of dots per line can be multiplied by the number of lines to identify the total number of pixels displayed by the monitor.
5.    What is the colour system called RGB
The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light is added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors.6.    Explain the video standards PAL, NTSC, and SECAM, what are the main differences between them.
PAL- (Phase Alternating Line) is the format for the UK and most European countries, except France.
NTSC- (National Television System Committee) is used in North American, Japan, and most of the countires in South America
SECAM- (Séquentiel Couleur à Mémoire—Sequential Color with Memory) Parts of Easter Europe use it.

7.    Which standard do we use in Australia?
the standard commonly used in Australia is PAL

8.    What is an IEEE 1394 port
Its also known as FireWire, its a component originated from Apple which, like a USB, allows the connection of peripherals to a computer, such as video cameras. However, there is one distinct difference. IEEE 1394 supports much higher bandwidth than USB, allowing you to get feed from a high-resolution video camera onto a computer without experiencing issues.
9.    Why do digital video cameras use video compression
Difital video camera's use video compression because once a videao signal is digital, it needs a large amount of storage space and transmission badwidth. Video compression reduces the amount of sata, several strategies are employed that compress the information. It does this without affecting the quality of the image.

10. Describe what a codec is.
It is a microchip that compresses or decompresses data.
11. What is meant by “generation loss”, where does it happen?
Generation loss refers to the loss of quality and potential increase of file size between subsequent copies of data. This occurs with old technology, and sometimes when trying to burn a video from an old camera, each time the video is burnt, the quality becomes weaker and weaker, generation loss.
